At beginning of 2024, ELKO Group from Latvia had come up with a plan to restore 9 low loss electric transformer to meet up delivering The European Green Deal. Each one of the transformers weighs 200 Ton, 20 feet wide (6 m), had to be hauled from Reno to Elko by two semi-trucks.
“Moving the transformer took quite a bit of planning.” said Will Johnson, supervisor of substation operations. At the beginning of 2024, KIET company team designed a PLC synchronous hydraulic system, including 350mm skidding system for the Latvian company, it was not an easy job considering limited allowance of the transformer lifting point and small area of installation, the engineers, however, adopted 4 sections of identical rails for the moving of transformer itself, designed multi stage lifting method for cylinders to move up and reciprocate until reaching the platform height.
The transformer arrived at the substation after a two-day journey and Johnson said the installation is expected to be completed by the end of April next year. He added it was fortunate the hydraulic parts were delivered in time because it takes about one to two years to have one project built.
